Setting
The first setting takes place on Sunday morning December 7, 1941, when the news of Japan's attack Pearl Harbor reaches the Wakatsuki in San Pedro Harbor in California. Then, it's in the Japanese ghetto on Terminal Island, and then in Boyle Heights in Los Angeles. The main setting is in the Manzanar Relocation Center in the desert 225 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California, where the Wakatsuki family lived there until October 1945.
After the war, the Wakatsuki moves to a public housing project called Cabrillo Homes in Long Beach California. Then later, the family moves to San Clara Valley outside of San Jose, California.
The last setting is Jeanne's revisiting Manzanar camp in April 1972 with her husband and three children.
A couple chapters mention Ka-Ke, a place outside of Hiroshima, Japan, where Woody visits Papa's family in April 1946, and Fort Lincoln, North Dakota, where Papa is held and interrogated.
